Course summary

The benefits of studying a language at A-level are various. There are inherent advantages to promoting flexibility of thought and an appreciation of different points of view - skills that are increasingly important in an unpredictable world. There are further advantages to be gained from studying the literature, culture and history of other countries if we are to create truly global citizens. The A-level course rewards those who actively seek to engage with the world around them and enjoy it to the full rather than seeing each transaction from the point of view of potential financial profit. An A-level in French offers many practical advantages. On leaving Radley, students can combine further linguistic study with a number of more vocational degree courses at university and the ability to speak a foreign language remains a very desirable skill for any CV. However, the real attraction is the chance to foster an enthusiasm for language, a sensitivity to and appreciation of other cultures and a plasticity of thought that will be an essential skill in the future. At A-level, students not only work on mastering fluency, accuracy and sophistication in their use of language but they also delve into the culture of the countries that speak the language. The A-level course can be separated into distinct themes and skills. The four themes for the French A-level course are: Theme 1: Changes in French society; Theme 2: Political and artistic culture in French speaking countries; Theme 3: Immigration and multicultural French society; Theme 4: Occupation and Resistance.

Entry requirements

How you'll be assessed

These themes are studied alongside two works (either two literary texts or one literary text and one film) assessed through two externally-examined papers and one teacher-examiner conducted speaking assessment. The course rewards creativity – assessments place an emphasis on spontaneity and grammar, as well as providing plenty of opportunities for students to apply their knowledge independently and creatively. Students are encouraged to develop ideas, use language to persuade and analyse, and give critical responses in their writing and speaking.
