Product Design (A level) is a hugely creative, yet technologically rich and challenging course suitable to everyone with aspirations in fields including all types of Design, Engineering, CGI/Digital industries and Architecture. You will acquire skills in a wide range of graphical communication, CAD, practical manufacturing and creative problem-solving techniques. Across the two years you will also study commercial and industrial theory of materials and manufacturing as they apply to designers solving real world problems. A series of exciting mini projects in Year 1 will provide candidates from any GCSE DT background with a range of skills that are useful for their Year 2 Product Design project which counts 50% towards the A level. The pupil chooses the project to suit their interests and further study/career preferences. It tackles a real-world design problem. The project requires very significant time commitments outside the classroom, and those choosing the subject must have a sound basic level of drawing skills. A Level Product Design focuses on a hands-on creative approach to design and engineering. To access the best grades candidates must have very strong drawing, problem solving, and creative skills coupled with excellent personal organisation and commitment. Candidates without a GCSE in the subject will find it very difficult to access these top grades. To access a B grade good drawing skills and organisation are required, along with a genuine enthusiasm to be creative and solve problems. Candidates who have weaker drawing skills, and/or no GCSE in the subject should carefully consider whether the option is suitable.
All applicants should be on course to achieve a minimum of 4 A (level 7 grades) and 4 B (level 6 grades). The A grades should be in the subjects they wish to study at A level.
Paper 1 and 2 are written exams. Paper 1 - 150 minutes - 30% Technical principles Paper 2 - 90 minutes - 20% Designing and making principles NEA/Coursework - Design and manufacture for a commercial design need - 50%
