Course summary

Studying Economics improves your ability to reason logically, and to analyse data. Graphs and diagrams are frequently used as an aid to reasoning, and you also need to be able to perform simple mathematical operations, such as calculating a percentage change. This means that mathematical competence is a considerable advantage. Although students can do well in A Level Economics without it, a good pass in A Level Mathematics is an essential requirement for many Economics degree courses (and an A* necessary for the top universities). If you think you might wish to study Economics at university, we strongly recommend taking A Level Mathematics too.

Entry requirements

The entrance criteria for the Sixth Form at Merchant Taylors' are simple: • We expect you to have excelled in your GCSE examinations this summer, especially in the subjects you intend to take at A Level. • We expect you to have worked hard and made a positive contribution throughout your time here. Your attitude must be one of wholehearted engagement with school life. • We expect you to make sensible and informed choices as to what to study for the Sixth Form. These choices need to reflect your abilities and need to have been agreed by your Tutor, the relevant Heads of Department, the Head of Middle School, the Deputy Head (Academic) and the Head Master. Although students can do well in A Level Economics without it, a good pass in A Level Mathematics is an essential requirement for many Economics degree courses (and an A* necessary for the top universities). How you'll be assessed

1. Written assessments in four subjects intended for study at A level, sat on Monday 4th November of Year 11. Candidates will be sent a choices booklet in October and asked to nominate the subjects they wish to study. The assessments will test aptitude for A level study at Merchant Taylors’. 2. A reference from the applicant’s current school. This will be requested directly from the school and is completed on a Merchant Taylors’ form. Applicants must also supply a copy of their most recent school report. 3. There will be interviews with specialists in the subjects that they wish to study at A Level and a general interview with a senior member of staff. The interviews will test academic aptitude and questions may also focus on strengths and weakness that became evident through the examination process. These are held in early December.
