Course summary

Geography will appeal to students who have an interest in and concern for the environment. It will also suit pupils who enjoy travelling and finding out about new people, places, landscapes and events. The syllabus follows on well from GCSE, with some familiar themes recurring at a higher level, but there are also many fresh and exciting topics. Paper 1 (30% of the Qualification) Tectonic Processes and Hazards. Coastal Landscapes and Change (Fieldwork – Dawlish Warren). The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity. The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security. Paper 2 (30% of the Qualification) Globalisation. Shaping Places, Regenerating Places (Fieldwork – Plymouth) Superpowers. Global Development and Migration, Identity and Sovereignty. Paper 3 (20% of the Qualification) This paper is a synoptic investigation, where students will be provided with a resource booklet around a contemporary world issue and asked to answer questions and solve problems around that issue.

Entry requirements

How you'll be assessed

Non-Examined Assessment (20% of the Qualification) The independent investigation will take the form of a 3000-4000 word report on a topic chosen and developed by the student. There will be a minimum of 4 days fieldwork.
