The Edexcel course has been chosen for the range of opportunities and breadth of experience it offers. The syllabus offers equal opportunity to explore some of the greatest achievements of our cultural heritage, and to examine lesser known or more controversial works, pushing at the boundaries of what is considered 'literary'. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on lively discussion and debate, interrogating critical standpoints and cultural assumptions, and producing a convincing argument. You will develop and hone your expertise in critical thinking, a sensitivity to nuances and shades of meaning, and the ability to articulate and structure all this coherently and lucidly in your writing.
All A Level English candidates should have at least a grade 6 at GCSE or IGCSE for English Literature. IGCSE English Language alone does not cover the necessary analytical skills, and so candidates without a Literature qualification are only considered in exceptional circumstances. This also applies to pupils for whom English is a second language.
Paper 1: Drama - A Shakespeare play and one other text Paper 2: Prose - A selection of two prose texts, including one pre-1900, linked by a particular theme or genre Paper 3: Poetry
