Course summary

There are six modules studied in the two-year linear assessed course as outlined below: Module 1 - Development of practical skills in biology: This module is not directly taught, rather it is embedded as the course progresses. This module has two strands; practical skills assessed in written examinations and practical skills assessed in the practical endorsement via a series of Practical Activity Groups (PAGS) shown above, against the national common practical assessment criteria (CPAC). Modules taught in Six One: Module 2 – Foundations in biology: This module explores cellular structure, biological molecules, nucleotides and nucleic acids, enzymes, biological membranes, cell division, cell diversity and cellular organisation. Module 3 – Exchange and transport: In this module, the importance of exchange surfaces in living organisms, alongside the study of transport in animals and transport in plants. Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease: Communicable diseases, disease prevention and the immune system are studied in this module, alongside the inter-linked topics of biodiversity, classification and evolution. Modules taught in Six Two: Module 5 – Communication, homeostasis and energy: Building-on and applying understanding from modules taught in Six One, this module is principally dedicated to applied physiology and biochemistry. Topics include neuronal and hormonal communication along with excretion in homeostatic control, plant and animal responses, photosynthesis and respiration. Module 6 – Genetics, evolution and ecosystems: This module also involves the application of topics studied in Six One and is directed toward exploring genetics, contemporary and ethical issues in relation to cloning and biotechnologies and conclude with a focus on ecosystems.

Entry requirements

A keen interest and enthusiasm is essential, and it is desirable to have attained a level 7 in either IGCSE Biology or level 7-7 in IGCSE dual award science. Furthermore, having a strong background in GCSE Mathematics and Chemistry, ideally at least level 7, would also be strongly advisable given the mathematical content and biochemistry content of the syllabus. Biology is a fantastic subject to be studied in combination with other science A Levels, in particular Chemistry, or alongside nonscience A Levels to provide breadth and to develop other skills.

How you'll be assessed

The A Level course is assessed through three examination papers which all include synoptic content and the practical endorsement is a pass/fail component based on the fulfilment of the CPAC’s demonstrated in PAGS completed throughout the course.
