Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Civilisation are offered at A Level. For Latin and Greek, students continue to study the language in more nuanced detail, with the option of composition into Latin or Greek. They study a prose author and a verse author to develop their knowledge of and personal response to the culture and mores behind the texts. Classical Civilisation (no GCSE requirement to study at A Level) involves the study of literature, art and culture, mainly of Ancient Greece. In the Lower Sixth, students study either Greek Theatre or Imperial Image. They also study Homer’s Odyssey. Both incorporate visual and material evidence as well as close reading of texts. In the Upper Sixth, students study Virgil’s Aeneid and Greek Religion.
Conditional offers are made in early December. Students are expected to achieve a minimum of eight GCSE passes with at least seven at Grade 7 or above. We also expect the students to obtain a Grade 7 or above in those subjects they wish to study in Sixth Form.
