This two-year course introduces students to a variety of experiences that explore a range of traditional and contemporary media, techniques and processes. It is delivered between both the Art and DT departments and provides excellent continuity from GCSE Fine Art or even GCSE Design & Technology: Product Design, from a more Art-based approach. Students will produce practical and critical/contextual work in one or more areas of study, for example, product design, jewellery/ body adornment and/or 3D digital design. Students will develop integrated knowledge, skills and understanding of the following: • the elements of 3D Design such as solid, void, form, shape, texture, colour, decoration, surface treatment, scale, proportion, structure, rhythm and movement. • a variety of 3D Design materials, processes, technologies and resources such as model-making, laser cutting and engraving, 3D printing, routing, casting, moulding, assembling and finishing using timber, metal and polymers. • intended audience or purpose for 3D Design. • the relationship of form and function and the ability to respond to a concept, work to a brief, theme or topic, or answer a need for 3D Design. • how ideas, feelings and meanings can be conveyed and interpreted in images and artefacts created in the context of 3D Design. • historical and contemporary developments and different styles and genres. • how images and 3D Design artefacts relate to social, environmental, cultural and/or ethical contexts. • a working vocabulary and specialist terminology that is relevant to 3D Design.
An assessment day is held at Queenswood in the November prior to entry. Applicants are required to sit entrance examinations in the subjects that they plan to study at A-level. We do not stipulate particular GCSE requirements, although Queenswood Sixth Formers will typically have achieved at least six Grade 6 results at GCSE, with Grades 7–9 in the subjects to be studied at A-level.
