Course summary

This creative and thought-provoking qualification gives pupils the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to succeed in a number of careers, especially those in the creative industries. They will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put their learning in to practice by producing prototypes of their choice in a range of materials. Pupils will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.

Entry requirements

Acceptance into the Sixth Form is conditional upon the applicant’s meeting the entrance requirements of the School. For those taking GCSE or IGCSE, the expectation is for a minimum of six 9-4 grades (equivalent to A* – C in the old grading system) including Mathematics and English, preferably with at least a grade 6/7 in the subjects to be studied at A-level. Under normal circumstances, a place will be offered following an interview and the receipt of a satisfactory report from the Head of the applicant’s present school.

How you'll be assessed

2 written exams worth 50%. A mixture of short answers and extended responses are required. A substantial design and make task with written or digital design portfolio and photographic evidence of the final prototype (50%). Pupils must demonstrate skills in maths, but always in the context of designing and making (up to GCSE level).
