Economics A Level is a social science studying how societies decide what goods and services to produce, in what quantity, by what means and ultimately ‘who gets what’. For example, students consider the effect of tax rates and government spending decisions on the economy, the effects of regulation and subsidies, and how development can best be aided. We follow the Edexcel specification. Studying Economics and Business contributes to an understanding of the modern world and builds these employability skills: • Creative problem solving • Mathematical and numerical competency • Logical analysis • Strong communication • Making balanced judgements The Economics and Business department also provides a range of extracurricular activities. GDST LEAD programme is aimed at encouraging entrepreneurial skills in all sixth formers where they work as part of a group to develop their social enterprise. They compete against teams from other GDST schools to be recognised for their creativity, problem-solving and presentation skills.
The entrance requirements for the Sixth Form are 5 GCSE passes graded 9-5 with 9-7 in the subjects chosen at A Level. To be eligible for an Academic Scholarship for the Sixth Form, a candidate would need to achieve grades 7-9 in all their GCSE subjects.
