Course summary

We offer both Literature, and Language and Literature at A Level. 100% A*-C pass rate at A Level English is the norm, with a high proportion of A*/A grades. Both courses include coursework. This element requires independent study, giving the students an opportunity to pursue a particular interest, and is worth 20% of their final grade. Students who show a suitable degree of flair, ability and interest in English Language or Literature are encouraged to consider applying to either Oxford or Cambridge. Each student is approached individually to establish whether they have an interest in pursuing this goal. This information is collated and passed on by the beginning of the Easter term. If interested in applying, they will be encouraged to attend and to organise English Society meetings.

Entry requirements

The basic entry requirement onto most courses is a minimum of a grade 6 at GCSE in an appropriate subject, however those students who embark on A Level studies with a grade 7 or above are likely to find the transition much easier. In some cases there may be further restrictions e.g. a minimum of a grade 6 in Maths to do Physics. Please see the following individual subject pages for further details. Students must also have achieved at least a grade 4 in both Maths and either English Language or Literature to qualify for entry into the Sixth Form. Students wishing to take English Language and Literature at A Level should write fluently and should be able to undertake significant reading. They should achieve at least a Grade 6 in either English Language or English Literature GCSE.
