Course summary

Mathematics is the art of problem solving, it is part of everyday life. From predicting the weather to understanding the origins of the universe, mathematics is used to describe and understand the world (and universe) around us. It is a vital tool in our increasingly technical world, playing an important role in many aspects of modern life, from protecting our details online to predicting the next stock market crash. Mathematics A Level is essential for those who wish to study Mathematics at university and is a facilitating subject for all Science and Engineering related degree courses.

Entry requirements

Successful 16+ candidates will usually receive an offer of a place conditional on their performance at the assessment day. The school expects applicants for the Sixth Form to achieve a grade 7 (A) or higher in the subjects they wish to study at A Level and an overall grade profile of at least four grade 7s (A) and no other grades lower than a 6 (B) at GCSE. Candidates should also have demonstrated an excellent attitude to work, and a willingness to contribute to the life of the school. How you'll be assessed

There are three papers, each of which is assessed by written examination lasting 2 hours. Paper 1: Pure Mathematics Paper 2: Pure Mathematics Paper 3: Statistics & Mechanics Each unit carries an equal weighting. Calculators are allowed in all papers.
