Biology nurtures a passion for the scientific study of life and lays the groundwork for further study in courses like Biological Sciences, Dentistry and Pharmacology. A-level Biology is fundamentally an experimental subject. The course provides numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to link theory to reality and equip students with the essential practical skills they need, such as industry field trips and the Year 12 field residential to Malham, Yorkshire. Students also enjoy participating in the national Biology Olympiad. A popular subject at AKS, Biology is usually required for Dentistry, Forensic Science, Marine Miology, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Veterinary Science and Zoology.
Year 11 students transfer automatically into the Sixth Form, provided that they have gained at least five subjects at grade 6 and above, including English Language and mathematics, and with no less than a grade 6 (ideally a 7, 8 or 9 grade) in the subjects, or related, with which they wish to continue at A level. In addition, the student’s record of conduct and attitude must meet the appropriately high expectations of the school’s Sixth Form
