Thinking about design can be daunting, but not thinking about it can be disastrous and will have a detrimental effect on society as everything we use now, or will be using in the future, will have to be designed. As Charles Eames said, “design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose”. Design pupils will be taught how to do this by being creative, experimental and to take risks and have fun, in order to develop skills that will allow them to solve the design problems they will tackle. Design and manufacture is a truly creative and intellectually challenging activity. It is entirely compatible with high levels of numeracy and literacy. The design process itself draws on areas such as Maths, Science, Technology, communication and Art; developing divergent and creative abilities is a basic function of education. One of our main aims is to inspire and empower our future Designers and Engineers and excite passion in our teaching so that they can develop products they love with sensitivity to an ever‐changing world market and clientele. We welcome pupils who have a background via GCSE (or other recognised qualifications) in any design‐related discipline, and we are also willing to consider pupils who have not studied the subject before but show a passion for design in any area (this is done through a portfolio and interview). It should be noted that the courses are quite demanding of your time but very rewarding as the outcomes are still unknown. This subject is very useful for a career in any sphere of product or industrial design also engineering, graphics, fashion, theatre or television. It is also a good supporting A Level for degree courses in any of the pure or applied sciences and architecture.
