An understanding of History is essential in making sense of the world we live in today. Pick up any newspaper and it will contain stories that cannot be fully understood without knowledge of the past. History at A Level teaches you skills like debating, information analysis, structured writing, data analysis and research. Your vocabulary will also improve. All these skills are useful in the job market. They also make you better equipped to deal with modern life! History overlaps with several other subjects like Philosophy, Politics, Economics, Sociology, Psychology and Anthropology. If you like the sound of them, you will like History. It complements several other A Level subjects like Politics, Literature and Geography, so you might find doing History helps you succeed in them, and visa versa, even if you only chose to study at AS. Any interest in the arts or media must lead you to be interested in History. Art, whether it is visual, musical or performance-based, is a reflection of the world we live in, and to understand that you need to know your history.
Candidates will need a minimum of six Grade 6s or above at GCSE and will preferably have Grade 7 at GCSE in the subjects they wish to study at A Level. Students wishing to study Mathematics will require a Grade 8 or 9. For Biology or English Grade 7 will be required. We will also require a minimum of Grade 5 in both English and Mathematics. Where a subject is new at A Level, students will be required to achieve Grade 7 or Grade 6 in related subjects, reflecting the skills required for success in these courses. You will need to have achieved at least a B grade at this level but an A grade is preferable.
