The History of Art A Level course offers an exciting programme of study for a subject that encompasses all that is vital to our understanding of the present. In a world increasingly saturated with images, acquiring and developing the skills to interpret this visual language will facilitate significant advantages as students navigate the future. Through the study of art, sculpture, and architecture, we are provided with a fascinating insight into humanity, both past and present. It truly is a subject that enables our understanding of the world, a fact supported by neuroscientists who claim that Art Historians see the world differently to others. One of the reasons for this is the astonishing breadth of the subject; where else can you also cover topics which simultaneously draw on philosophy, science, religion, literature, music, politics, economics, gender studies, ethnicity, and cultural history
For entry into the Sixth Form, candidates are required to have at least six good passes at GCSE, including English and Maths.
The course and the subject are assessed solely upon students’ performance in two three-hour examinations. The desire and ability to write essay-style responses under timed conditions is recommended, so having an interest in reading research material and confidence in writing at length are both essential skills for aspiring art historians.
