Course summary

This course can only be studied in conjunction with Mathematics. It counts as a separate qualification and, with Mathematics, requires the time of two A Levels. Further Mathematics, as the name suggests, involves both broader and deeper study of Mathematics than the standard course. It consists of a mixture of Pure and Applied maths.

Entry requirements

This A Level is ideal for those with a love of mathematics. It is not an easy qualification, but it is rewarding for those who enjoy abstract maths and problem solving. It gives pupils the opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful and exciting areas of mathematics. Pupils need to have a genuine interest and a facility with mathematics, and they must have attained a strong grade 8 or, preferably, a grade 9 in IGCSE Mathematics. They are advised strongly to discuss the course with their teachers and the Head of Mathematics. Good further mathematicians typically have enjoyed and done well in maths challenges and competitions during their GCSE years.

How you'll be assessed

There will be four exams, each lasting 90 minutes and for which calculators are permitted. Two assess pure mathematics; the others assess mechanics and statistics.
