Ever wondered why people conform to social norms? Do you know why people will just walk past someone who has collapsed in the street and not help? Want to know what would happen if you sliced your brain in two? Have you thought about why there are age restrictions on films and games? If you want to know the answers to these questions and many more about why we do the things we do, then studying psychology is for you. So what is psychology? Many people think of psychology as ‘mind reading’, well to an extent it is. Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and thinking. Psychologists are interested in finding out why humans (and other animals) act and think in the way that we do. At Kingsley, we follow the OCR exam specification. In your first year, you will study 14 core pieces of psychological research, you will also learn how psychologists conduct their research (and you will get to do some small-scale experiments yourself) and you will also discover some key debates in psychology; is our behaviour due to ourselves or the situation, are our actions due to our biology or our upbringing? In the second year, you will continue to use your research method and debate knowledge, applying it to a further 6 pieces of psychological research. The course then moves to the topic of 'Applied Psychology', which involves learning about 'Issues in mental health', child psychology and criminal psychology. Throughout the course, you will be required to use some maths and statistics.
