This vocational course will start with an exploration of business which acts as a foundation for further development of your knowledge and understanding of some key areas of business theory in context. With a total of four units of study the qualification is equivalent to a single A Level and includes the opportunity to investigate real business successes and failures.
This course is ideal for pupils who are passionate about business and are either planning to start their own business or pursue a career in business. It is a subject that requires pupils to learn theories, apply them to real businesses through their research, and assess their effectiveness. The course will suit you if you prefer coursework to exams and want the chance to carry out a detailed investigation of different businesses. You do need to be able to cope with constant and tight deadlines. There is a significant element of reading and writing because of the coursework, but also an expectation that pupils discuss and question at every opportunity.
• Unit 1: Exploring Business • Unit 2: Developing a Marketing Campaign • Unit 3: Personal and Business Finance • Unit 4: Optional Unit (the full details are to be confirmed at time of going to press but may include recruitment and selection, customer service, market research and the English legal system). Three out of four units will be studied by completing coursework investigating at least one actual business, and the fourth topic is assessed through an external examination. You will develop your skills of independent learning, research, problem solving and organisation. Organisation is important so you can cope with the significant workload of completing weekly coursework activities. Analysing data and communicating using written, numerical, visual and verbal methods are all part of the course. Before and throughout the course pupils are encouraged to read up on businesses (brands, sports clubs, festivals, cars etc) that they are interested in. Pupils are also expected to take an interest in current business news so that they can begin to understand the causes and effects of consumer, business and government behaviour.
