Core Maths is a Level 3 Maths qualification that is equal in size to an AS Level qualification and is graded A-E. It has the same number of UCAS tariff points as an AS Level qualification. However, it is distinct from AS Mathematics as learners consolidate mathematical techniques that can be directly applied to real-life contexts. Studying Core Maths helps pupils develop their quantitative and problem-solving skills. Many universities have shown their support for Core Maths and it is valuable preparation for the quantitative skills they will need for many degree courses, particularly subjects such as psychology, geography, business-related courses, sports and social sciences, and natural science courses that do not require AS/A Level Mathematics.
Core Maths is intended for pupils who have passed GCSE Mathematics at Grade 4 or better, but who have not chosen to study AS or A Level Mathematics. Pupils will consider and tackle Mathematics in meaningful contexts, including through financial applications and statistical ideas that can support work in other subjects. It can be taken alongside A Levels or other qualifications, including vocational courses.
