Psychology is ‘the scientific study of human mind and behaviour’. It is a challenging subject which offers pupils the opportunity to gain a fascinating insight into our behaviour, thoughts, feelings and decisions using a scientific methodology. Pupils will acquire a wide range of transferable skills including effective communication, the ability to evaluate research as well as analytical and data handling skills. The subject bridges mathematics, sciences and humanities, and involves extended writing.
Pupils will be required to have GCSE Grade 6 in one English course, Biology and Mathematics. As in any Key Stage 5 subject, dedication, enthusiasm and hard work go a long way towards achieving success.
The specification is AQA and the content is as follows: Paper 1 - Introductory Topics - Social influence, Memory, Attachment, Psychopathology Paper 2 - Psychology in Context - Approaches, Biopsychology, Research methods Paper 3 - Issues and Options in Psychology Issues and debates in Psychology: • Select one from unit B: Relationships, Gender or Cognition and development • Select one from unit C: Schizophrenia, Eating Behaviour or Stress • Select one from unit D: Aggression, Forensic Psychology or Addiction Each unit is assessed via examination only and involves a two-hour examination.
