The aim of the course is to enhance students’ skills in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing over the two years through the study of a broad range of cultural, social and political issues. Themes include aspects of French-speaking or Hispanic society such as family life, technology, and multiculturalism; cultural heritage and popular culture; and aspects of the political landscape such as the right to vote, political protest and immigration in the countries in which the target language is spoken. Film and literature are also studied in addition to translation skills.
A strong interest in either French or Spanish is essential to study the course at A Level, with a GCSE in the respective Language of a grade 6 or above would be desirable.
The French and Spanish A-Level qualification consists of three papers. Paper 1 (50%): Listening, reading and writing Paper 2 (20%): Writing (French/Spanish) Paper 3 (30%): Speaking.
