Geography studies the world and its people, looking at how the physical and human worlds interact over both space and time. Geography is evident in our daily lives. As a geographer, you will study how you fit into the big picture and begin to see how your actions could lead to change and affect the world’s future. Topics are split into two categories. Physical Geography explores water and carbon cycles, hazards, coastal systems and landscapes. Human Geography examines global systems and global governance, changing places, population and the environment.
Entry for external candidates at 16+ is conditional upon a candidate achieving a minimum of 5 GCSE grades 9 – 5 (or equivalent), including a minimum Grade 6 in the subjects proposed for study at A Level or can provide evidence that they would succeed in the given subject at A Level standard.
The course is assessed via a mix of examination and coursework. The examinations are made up of two 2.5 hour examinations. One in Physical Geography and one in Human Geography. Questions on both papers include multiple choice, short answers and extended prose with up to four levels of response. The coursework is a 3,000-4,000 word individual geographical investigation based on fieldwork.
