In the Drama and Theatre department we strive above all to craft excellent productions and to give actors and technicians alike a creative and engaging training in the basics of theatre. Pupils learn both in the classroom and in the extra-curricular setting, developing academic skills and techniques which they can then apply in performance. Drama is an extremely popular activity throughout the school, with more than 400 pupils involved in production and performance during a typical year. The school has a purpose-built theatre and plenary space but also uses professional venues in the city including Norwich Theatre Royal, The Playhouse, The Madder market, Norwich Puppet Theatre, The Garage and Epic Film Studios. Access to the professional world of theatre allows the pupils to gain insight into both technical and on-stage experiences, preparing them for life beyond the classroom. We teach the Edexcel linear A level in Drama and Theatre. The structure of the syllabus allows pupils to explore scripts both as performer and director, to perform in a directed play either as actors or technical candidates. The skills taught within this course often serve as a conduit, leading pupils on to various theatre-based courses at university or drama school.
Admission to the school is a conditional place based on achieving a minimum of 6x6 grade passes at GCSE; this is a minimum entry requirement and higher grades might be necessary in intended A Level subjects, namely the Sciences and Maths.
