Geography is an exciting and dynamic subject that enables us to understand the world in which we live and develops our awareness of major issues at local, national and global levels, such as landform processes, environmental pressures, resource management, population and migration issues, globalisation and urban change. Geography pupils are well equipped as citizens of the 21st century; learning methods prepare them for higher education and the workplace. Understanding of statistical data, maps, photographs, and GIS, including the internet, discussion and debate as well as the written word are all part of learning. Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. It is hands on, it is relevant and it is fun. The course will give you the chance to get to grips with some of the big questions which affect our world, your future, and understand the social, economic and physical forces and processes which will shape and change our world.
Pupils would benefit from studying GCSE Geography and ideally achieving a Grade 7 or above. Pupils who have not taken GCSE Geography will be evaluated on an individual basis.
1. Physical Systems (examination) 22% • Glaciated Landscapes • Earth’s Life Support Systems 2. Human Interactions (examination) 22% • Global Connections • Changing Spaces; Making Places 3. Geographical Debates (examination) 36% • Hazardous Earth • Disease Dilemmas 4. Investigative Geography (coursework) 20% The independent investigation develops pupils’ skills (extended writing, presenting data, self-directed study, research techniques) and abilities which are applicable not only to study in higher education but also within the world of work and life. This process will be supported by a five-day residential field trip to the Lake District.
