PE at A Level is a multidisciplinary course covering a diverse range of topics including human biology, history, sociology, psychology and practical performance. The main reason to choose any subject to study at A Level is interest. This will automatically lead to effort and hopefully to an enjoyment of the learning process. We will help you to develop your knowledge; your ability to interpret questions; and improve the skills necessary for success in all in four units of the course. This A Level, because of its breadth of material, will complement any combination of choices, however the links between A Level Biology and the anatomy and physiology unit are obvious. The same can be said for A Level Psychology and unit 2 in PE.
Previous experience of GCSE PE is not a prerequisite to study this course however candidates must have an interest in the subject content and be competing in at least one sport outside of school at club level.
The course has three distinct modules of equal weighting and each will be assessed by a two hour examination at the end of the two year course. 1. Physiological Factors Affecting Performance (written examination) 30% • Applied anatomy and physiology • Exercise physiology • Biomechanics 2. Psychological Factors Affecting Performance (written examination) 20% • Skill acquisition • Sport psychology 3. Socio-Cultural Issues in Physical Activity and Sport (written examination) 20% • Sport and society • Contemporary issues in physical activity and sport 4. Performance in Physical Education (non-examination assessment) 30% • Performance or coaching • Evaluation and analysis of performance for improvement (EAPI)
