Both curriculum and examination PE open up the world of sport. Pupils are encouraged to immerse themselves in sports and PE with the chance to perform, coach, officiate and ultimately develop lifelong participation in physical activity. Sport and PE give pupils skills for a modern world, by developing practical skills, such as communication, leadership, dealing with pressure, split-second decision-making and analysing and evaluating performance. This complete grounding in the subject provides a fantastic base from which pupils can build upon when they move on to higher education, employment or further training. A base in sports gives a multitude of career possibilities, such as professional athlete, sports psychologist, sports coach/teacher/lecturer, sports marketing/media, fitness professional and physiotherapist. Throughout the A Level course, we aim to give pupils a well-rounded and full introduction to the world of PE, sport and sports science. 8 separate strands are covered throughout years 12 and 13, applied anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, skill acquisition, sports psychology, sport and society and contemporary issues in physical activity and sport. For the practical element, the pupils choose a single sport for which they will be assessed. They also complete an evaluation and analysis of performance for improvement, where they get to apply all of the theoretical knowledge they have gleaned from the course to a practical situation.
Students will have a minimum of 6 GCSE subjects at Level 5 (grade C) or above and the following subjects also have additional requirements: • Further Mathematics: Level 7 in GCSE Mathematics • Science subjects: Level 6 in GCSE Mathematics • P.E: Club-level participation in at least one sport • Music: Proficiency in an instrument/voice to at least grade 5 level and GCSE music • Art and Design: A strong portfolio of work, if GCSE has not been studied previously
