Physics is, essentially, the study of matter and energy and how these quantities interact. Since matter and energy make up everything in the universe Physics is, therefore, the study of the most basic components of our existence and, to a greater or lesser extent, the foundation of all other sciences. Physicists comprise an extremely broad church and its principles are the basis for all engineering, electronics, computing, telecoms, transport, medical imaging, electricity, energy and more: it is unequivocally the foundation stone underpinning 21st century living. Indeed, most UK manufacturing takes place in Physics-based industry, with sector growth far exceeding all others, including a recent resurgence in the UK Space industry. Physicsbased businesses contribute around £¼ trillion to the UK economy, employing over two million people. Globally, Physics fundamentally underpins efforts to reverse humanity’s impact on climate change. Physicists will remain highly valued and in demand, with AI unlikely to supplant them.
For entry into the Sixth Form, candidates must have a mean score above 5.5 over their best eight GCSE subjects. Grade 6 at GCSE is almost invariably the minimum requirement for starting an A Level and Grade 7 is preferred (8 for Mathematics). To join the Sixth Form, pupils must have at least a 5 in both English Language and Mathematics. Information on the entrance tests for admission into the Sixth Form is available on the School website under ‘Entry to The Leys’
There are three assessed components (a 2 hour exam for each) and vital practical assessments too. There are specified practicals (“required practicals”) through which the CPAC (Common Practical Assessment Criteria) are assessed. By the end of the course, pupils must consistently and routinely meet various competencies and if successful will receive an endorsement on their A Level certificate. Many universities require the practical endorsement as part of their admissions criteria for a wide range of courses.
