Course summary

Studying French in Higher Line can open up a wide range of future professional, career or life opportunities. The significance of language skills to our economy and public life is consistently upheld by the Russell Group of Universities and the CBI, among other prestigious universities worldwide. By the end of a language course, pupils will have increased confidence in their ability to understand and express themselves fluently when conversing or writing about a wide range of topics. We offer small classes and a highly personalised language learning experience. Our team of language teachers comprises highly experienced linguists who are also examiners, native speakers who teach the literature and culture of their native countries and who offer conversation classes in small groups or on a 1-1 basis in order to provide the best opportunities for our pupils to excel in French. Stonyhurst offers a variety of stimulating course enrichment activities such as film clubs, study visits, exchange partners and 1-1 preparation for prestigious university entrance. Our aim is to help pupils to develop and share their individual gifts and talents, to learn from others and to reach their full potential in French and more broadly, preparing them for a global career.

Entry requirements

Entry to the Sixth Form is based upon interview (via video or telephone call, if international), a satisfactory performance in the entrance examination, completion of a 500-word handwritten personal statement and submission of satisfactory school reports and school reference. We would also expect good performance at GCSE (or equivalent). Applicants would normally be required to have obtained a minimum of 5 Grade 6 passes at GCSE (or equivalent). Applicants for the Cambridge Technical course would be expected to achieve Grade 4 passes at GCSE including Maths and English Language, together with 3 other Grade 4s at GCSE. Some international pupils may be required to sit the Oxford Placement test. UK boarders will also be required to complete an overnight trial board if becoming a boarder.

How you'll be assessed

A Levels have now moved away from the traditional AS/A2 structure to a two-year linear course with all exams at the end of the two years. The topics studied in the AQA course will address a range of social issues and trends, as well as aspects of the political and artistic culture of France and French-speaking countries. Students will study texts and film and will have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of their choice.
