Studying Spanish in Higher Line will give you access to a range of courses at a variety of universities providing access to interesting and exciting careers. Language courses fit well alongside virtually all other subjects and studying a language as a main or joint subject at university allows you spend part of your degree abroad. The more authentic contact that you have with the many Spanish-speaking countries, the better. At Stonyhurst, this includes regular conversation practice with our Spanish Language Assistant, access to a wide-range of films, music and literature, and the opportunity to take part in foreign trips. We also offer a variety of stimulating course enrichment activities, such as the Hispanic society, Spanish reading club and visits to/from our exchange school in Montevideo, Uruguay. You will become a researcher in various aspects of the Spanish language and Hispanic societies, politics and cultures.
Entry to the Sixth Form is based upon interview (via video or telephone call, if international), a satisfactory performance in the entrance examination, completion of a 500-word handwritten personal statement and submission of satisfactory school reports and school reference. We would also expect good performance at GCSE (or equivalent). Applicants would normally be required to have obtained a minimum of 5 Grade 6 passes at GCSE (or equivalent). Applicants for the Cambridge Technical course would be expected to achieve Grade 4 passes at GCSE including Maths and English Language, together with 3 other Grade 4s at GCSE. Some international pupils may be required to sit the Oxford Placement test. UK boarders will also be required to complete an overnight trial board if becoming a boarder.
The assessment for A level is as follows: Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing. 2 hour and 30 minute examination worth 50% of the total A Level. The core themes include: Aspects of Hispanic society; Artistic culture in the Hispanic world; Multiculturalism in Hispanic society; Aspects of political life in Hispanic society. Paper 2: Writing. 2 hour examination worth 20% of the total A Level. This includes either one text and one film or two texts from the lists set in the specification (currently the film and novel noted above). Paper 3: Speaking. 21-23 minutes (including 5 minutes preparation time). Examination worth 30% of the total A Level.
