Classical Civilisation offers pupils an exciting opportunity to investigate important issues still prevalent in modern society, such as war and its impacts, sexuality and relationships, health and beauty standards, and civil unrest, through the lens of ancient stories and images. With a time period spanning eight centuries of literature, artworks and culture, there is huge variety in the history, texts and visual and material culture set for study. The A Level in Classical Civilisation allows pupils to learn vital analytical and evaluative skills and how to apply these to vastly different source material, ranging from ancient epic poetry, to 5th century BC artworks, to love poems and philosophy.
For entry into the Sixth Form, candidates must have a mean score above 5.5 over their best eight GCSE subjects. Grade 6 at GCSE is almost invariably the minimum requirement for starting an A Level and Grade 7 is preferred (8 for Mathematics). To join the Sixth Form, pupils must have at least a 5 in both English Language and Mathematics. Information on the entrance tests for admission into the Sixth Form is available on the School website under ‘Entry to The Leys’
At A Level, pupils study three modules: World of thee Hero (Homer’s Iliad and Virgil’s Aeneid), Greek Art and either Love and Relationships or Politics of the Late Republic. Pupils take three papers, each corresponding to one of the modules, at the end of the Upper Sixth. Personal response to the literature, artworks and ideas is strongly encouraged and pupils engage with modern scholarship within each module to help them develop their own informed critical perspective. Thus, Classical Civilisation makes a strong complement to other source-based subjects such as English, History, Geography, Divinity or Economics but also works well for those pursuing STEM subjects to maintain and enhance their ‘soft’ written and oral communication skills.
