Course summary

After an initial term of teacher-led learning, students are invited to investigate creative areas of their choice, relevant to their growing artistic ideas, passions and intentions. Experiment, reflection and observation are recorded in an ongoing visual journal and presented as the Process Portfolio. Often created both in a traditional sketchbook and through tablet devices, this forms both a record of progress and a creative tool to facilitate progress. Thursday evening sessions provide opportunities for life classes, printmaking, photography or sculpture as well as open studio time. A Comparative Study allows students to investigate works of art and their contexts of personal interest and relevance in considerable detail. Through visual analysis, historical investigation and cultural research, students learn a range of approaches to responding to works of art. The course culminates in a final exhibition of work that best represents the artists’ creative vision. In recent years, this has been held at the Oxo Bargehouse on the Thames. Examples of student work can be seen at www.sevenoaksschoolart.org The Standard Level course is almost identical to Higher Level; it is just the volume of work that is reduced. While many Visual Arts candidates choose to read unrelated subjects at university, in recent years pupils have gone on to university in the UK and abroad to study Architecture, Art History, Design disciplines, Film Production, Fine Art and Game Design.
