Course summary

Physics is the most fundamental of the Experimental Sciences in that it seeks to explain the basic features of the natural world, primarily in terms of the interactions between matter and energy, and how these cause the Universe to behave as it does. Both the Standard Level and Higher Level programmes demonstrate how the Sciences intertwine, fine-tune students’ problem-solving skills, develop their experimental techniques and teach them about some of the social and historical aspects of Physics. The IB Physics course is divided into five themes that each contain several smaller topics. Mechanics, thermodynamics, waves, fields, the world’s climate, electricity and magnetism are studied by all students; Higher Level students then explore these areas in more depth and embark on some extra topics, such as rotational mechanics and relativistic motion. In the second year of the course, the Higher Level physicists also learn about the curious nature of particles and waves, how they are difficult to distinguish and how some quantities can change depending on how you try and measure them. IB Physics lessons include a wide variety of activities, including computer modelling, open-ended practical challenges, structured investigations, theoretical discussions and opportunities to use mathematics to solve complex problems. Higher Level Physics is an excellent and essential course for any student intending to study Physics or a Physics-related course at university, such as Natural Sciences (Physical) or Engineering. It also provides superb support for other courses such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics and Medicine. Standard Level Physics is suitable for students who have enjoyed the subject in the past, and have an interest in, and curiosity about, the Universe around them.
