Course summary

Why study A Level Music? Studying A Level Music allows students to explore a wide range of musical genres from a variety of perspectives. It is a good subject to study in the Sixth Form as it encompasses both practical and academic approaches to learning, as well as enabling students to broaden their musical understanding far beyond their instrumental/singing lessons. Regardless of whether students are keen to pursue a career in music, it is seen by universities as an excellent accompaniment to other subjects as it instils a wide range of transferable skills. Because of this, studying music actually opens the doors to a wide range of university courses and careers, both within and outside of the Arts. What will I be studying ? Appraising music (40%) This aspect of the course is studied through exploring three areas of study: Compulsory: • AOS 1: Western Classical Tradition Choose two of the following: • AOS 2: Pop music • AOS 3: Music for media • AOS 4: Music for theatre • AOS 5: Jazz • AOS 6: Contemporary traditional music • AOS 7: Art music since 1910 Performance (35%) One solo and/or ensemble performance lasting 10-12 minutes. This is recorded between March and May of Year 13 and should be approximately grade 7-8 standard at that point to access top grades. This can be a combination of multiple instruments/voice. Composing music (25%) Two compositions lasting 4½ - 6 minutes in total. Composition 1: Composition to a brief (25 marks) Composition 2: Free composition (25 marks) Both compositions are accompanied by a programme note (150 words each) How will A Level Music help me in the future? Studying A Level Music develops many transferable skills, including analytical and essay-writing skills, technological and creative skills and presentation and performance skills, which demonstrate an ability to cope with nerves and work as part of a team. Universities value music qualifications as they know that the wide range of skills needed to gain a good grade in A Level Music demonstrate high levels of intelligence and creativity. For this reason, it is viewed as an excellent accompaniment to other subjects, even if you don’t choose to pursue the subject itself at degree level. Careers in music are varied and can include performance, composition, conducting, musicology, music editing, music therapy, journalism, events management, artist management and education.

Entry requirements

What qualifications are needed to follow this course? Six GCSEs/IGCSEs at grade 6 including English and Mathematics. In addition, a grade 6 in Music.

How you'll be assessed

How is the course assessed? Written examination: 2 hrs 30 mins (40%) This includes listening, analysis and essay questions. Solo and/or ensemble performance coursework: (35%) This should last between 10-12 minutes and should be between Grade 7-8 standard. Composition coursework: (25%) Two pieces lasting between 4 ½ - 6 minutes in total.
