Course summary

Why study A Level French? Learning French in the Sixth Form provides an opportunity to learn more about the culture of France. The focus for GCSE is language acquisition, but at A Level you are given the chance to immerse yourself in learning about what it is like to live in modern day France. Language learning provides many future opportunities, but the chance to travel for work and study, now and in the future, is one of the main benefits. What will I be studying ? Students will study how French-speaking society has been shaped, socially and culturally. The four themes are: • The changes in French society (family, education, world of work) • Political and artistic culture in French-speaking countries • Immigration and multicultural society • Occupation and resistance (Second World War) You will also study a novel (No et Moi) and a film (La Haine). How will I be studying? Students will study a variety of material. Teaching is conducted in the target language and a range of authentic resources is used to access the topics of the A Level course. All students have regular sessions with our Foreign Language Assistant and are supported in techniques to enable them to become effective independent learners. How will A Level French help me in the future? An A Level in a language is a really great asset and is highly valued by employers. As well as being a really important European language, French is widely spoken in many other countries in the world. The communication skills and the rigour involved with studying a language at A Level are also highly regarded by university interview panels for a variety of courses including Medicine and Dentistry. Many medical students who have French A Level go on to do their elective year in a developing French-speaking country. By the end of the A Level French course, students will have attained an impressive level of fluency.
