Course summary

Why study A Level English Literature? An A Level English Literature course is highly regarded as it is a sign of sophisticated communication skills, analytical flair and creative thinking. It offers you the chance to develop your own opinions about writing, based on careful and enjoyable reading of texts. It helps you to express yourself with clarity and develop an individual line of argument. A Level English Literature will ask you interesting questions about the way we respond to our world, and will open your mind to new ideas about human relationships. What will I be studying? During your two years, you will study a minimum of eight texts, including at least two examples of each of the genres of prose, poetry and drama across the course as a whole. This will include: at least three texts published before 1900, including at least one text by Shakespeare; at least one work first published or performed after 2000. How will I be studying? Activities will obviously vary, depending on both texts and teaching staff, but you can expect that the study of English will involve reading some of the text in class, discussing particular sections, themes, or ideas in groups, sharing research, and making small presentations, and essay writing. Unlike GCSE study, it is probable that you will be asked to read some sections of the texts on your own, in advance of the lesson – you should be prepared for this. You will also be expected to carry out significant wider reading to give depth and breadth to your understanding of your set texts. How will A Level English Literature help me in the future? A Level English Literature opens up a wide range of career choices as the skills developed are vital for the modern, information-rich world. You will improve your communication skills, and have a better understanding of the way language can be used. Your oral confidence will increase through the various presentations and discussions you will undertake. The course will enhance your written skills, both analytical and creative. Students who have studied A Level English Literature here have gone on to pursue many career options.
