Course summary

Why study A Level German? Advanced level skills in a foreign language are in great demand with employers and are highly prized by universities. Germany is our major European trading partner and the biggest economy in the EU so German language skills can lead to exciting career prospects within international organisations. The German language provides a strong basis for learning Scandinavian and other Eastern European languages, Dutch, Flemish and Afrikaans. English native speakers who know German are increasingly rare and hence in ever greater demand in today’s globalised workplace. The fascinating cultural and historical heritage of Germany can best be explored through the study of its language. What will I be studying? • The development of German society • Political and artistic culture in German-speaking countries • Immigration and the German multicultural society • The German Reunification In-depth study of these themes will develop your speaking, listening, reading and translating skills. You will also study two literary texts, or one text and one film in German as part of your course. How will I be studying? You will continue to develop your language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) as well as studying German grammar in depth. In addition to your lessons, you will have one 30 minute individual session per week with the German Assistant, which will allow you to focus on your spoken language. The A Level topics will ensure that you broaden your knowledge of German culture. You will also take a look at German history and society through the medium of its cinema. There will also be much use of German media (TV and press) online. How will A Level German help me in the future? With ever fewer schools providing German at A Level in the UK, you will be in possession of a rare but valuable qualification. Many companies have a branch or head office in a German-speaking country and you will be surprised by how even a working knowledge of this language will accelerate your path towards promotion. Opportunities abound in teaching, interpreting, international law, finance and business, to name but a few. Many science and engineering companies are based in Germany and so scientists will also benefit enormously from knowing the language.
