Course summary

There are many reasons to study A-level economics. Without some knowledge of economics, it is impossible to understand the world in which we live. Every day, for example, the media report about economic issues such as unemployment, inflation (rising prices), economic growth, government spending and taxation, exchange rates, international trade and share/commodity prices and exchange rate movements. You will learn how the economy works how individuals and firms make decisions and what policies may be adopted to help improve society, both nationally and internationally.\ Economics is a rigorous and rewarding academic subject which is well respected by universities and employers alike. A qualification in economics is an excellent basis for a career in many areas. Other subjects fit in well with economics, including mathematics, politics, geography, history, and science. It is recommended that those considering a degree in economics should also study A-level mathematics as well. The specification has four main themes that concentrate on different areas. Theme 1 and 3 focus on microeconomics where students develop an understanding of the basic economic problem and how markets work. This incorporates the concepts of supply and demand and elasticity as well as government intervention. Theme 3 develops these concepts further and discusses business costs, revenues and profits and then investigates market structures and the labour market. Macroeconomics is the key focus for themes 2 and 4; students develop an understanding of the wider economic context, both in the UK and globally. This incorporates aggregate demand and supply, economic growth, inflation, unemployment and the balance of payments – before looking at international economics, the financial sector, poverty and inequality. You will develop an interest and enthusiasm for the subject through learning economic concepts that help your understanding of the wider economic and social environment. Active learning through reference to current affairs and issues that are around us all the time helps you to develop an enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to economics. You will develop data handling skills and other qualities which will equip you for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of adult and working life. Economics is a highly respected academic subject that can be studied alongside most A Levels. The variety of careers open to well-qualified economics graduates is extensive including both the private and public sectors.
