Why study A Level Spanish? The Spanish Department aims to help students become proficient in the use of Spanish; this involves not only linguistic competence, but also to be able to engage critically with stimulating texts and films, developing an appreciation of sophisticated and creative uses of the language and understanding them within their cultural and social context. Furthermore, students also gain a broad knowledge and a thorough understanding of Spanish speaking cultures, both contemporary and historic. What will I be studying ? A Level Spanish is a two year course through which you study four main themes: Theme 1: Aspects of Hispanic society. Theme 2: Artistic culture in the Hispanic world. Theme 3: Multiculturaism in Hispanic society. Theme 4: Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world. Students also study a literary text (Federico Garcia Lorca’s La Casa de Bernarda Alba) and a film (El Laberinto del Fauno, Guillermo del Toro). Moreover, students develop an independent research on a topic of their own choice. How will I be studying? Class sizes are small and you will be expected to participate in every lesson to build up your confidence in the language. We use a wide range of materials such as podcasts, newspapers, magazines and documentaries to make the content of the course current and authentic. Grammar is also a key element in this course and you will gain grammatical proficency throughout your two years. Finally, you will be invited to participate in the many cultural activities and enrichment opportunities that the Spanish Department offers. How will A Level Spanish help me in the future? Studying A Level Spanish provides valuable skills for travelling abroad, further education and employment potential. Spanish is one of the world’s major languages, with over 500 million speakers globally, and it has become a major player in the European and world business. This course prepares students for future opportunities in many areas of employment. Also, linguists in general enjoy better career prospects and are often valued for their excellent communication skills and open-minded attitude.
What qualifications are needed to follow this course? Six GCSEs/IGCSEs at grade 6 including English and Mathematics. In addition, a grade 6 in Spanish.
How is the course assessed? You will have to complete three papers Paper 1: (50%) Listening, reading and translation. Paper 2: (20%) Written response to literary text and film and translation. Paper 3: (30%) Speaking, including a presentation of your independent research project.
