Course summary

Why study A Level Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter and energy and the interaction between them. It can help you to understand current events, including news about petroleum, product recalls, pollution, the environment and technological advances. In fact, chemistry is everywhere in the world around you. It is food, clothes, water, medicines, cleaning products… you name it! There are many reasons to study A Level Chemistry, even if you are not pursuing a career in science, as chemistry applies to many careers such as the food industry, retail sales, transportation, art and design because you will learn how to become objective and how to reason and solve problems. What will I be studying? Physical Chemistry: Atomic structure, stoichiometry, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibria, redox, thermo-dynamics, rate constants, equilibrium constants, electrode potentials, acids and bases. Inorganic Chemistry: Periodicity, alkaline earth metals, halogens, period 3 elements and transition metals. Organic Chemistry: Nomenclature, alkanes, halogenoalkanes, alkenes, alcohols, analysis, aldehydes and ketones, aromatic chemistry, amines, polymers, amino acids, proteins and DNA, organic synthesis, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, and chromatography. How will I be studying? There will be a mixture of approaches to include note-taking, long answer questions, problem-solving and interpretation of data. There will also be a significant amount of practical work; you will need to complete 12 required practical tasks in addition to all the class practical work all of which will be written up in your own laboratory book. How will A Level Chemistry help me in the future? On this course you will begin to understand the extent to which chemistry has revolutionised our lives, but also the problems that it has created and the way in which solutions to these problems are being sought. A good A Level in this subject is valued by universities, who regard it as a sign of a clear, analytical mind, good practical skills and a person who is prepared to work hard at their studies.

Entry requirements

What qualifications are needed to follow this course? Six GCSEs/IGCSEs at grade 6 including English. In addition, a grade 7 in Mathematics and Chemistry or grade 7/7 in Double Science.

How you'll be assessed

How is the course assessed? Paper 1: 2 hours (35%) A mixture of short and long answer questions on practical skills, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. Paper 2: 2 hours (35%) The structure is the same as for Paper 1, however the paper covers practical skills, organic chemistry and physical chemistry. Paper 3: 2 hours (30%) This is a synoptic paper that covers content from across the whole course. Predominantly a mixture of long and short answer questions testing the specification and the understanding in practical techniques and data analysis. There are also a number of multiple choice questions. No coursework
