Why study A Level History? The A Level History syllabus has been designed to give students an exciting mixture of British, European and world history. There is no repetition of GCSE topics but there are many intellectual developments from previous studies. This means that A Level History is an equally attractive option for students who have enjoyed GCSE History and for newcomers to the subject. Learning History is vital to understanding the modern world and making links to today is an integral part to how you will learn. What will I be studying? There will be a choice of options: Option E • Russia, c1917–1991: from Lenin to Yeltsin • Mao’s China, c1949–1976 • Ireland and the Union, c1774–1923 • Coursework – the origins of the Cold War Option F • In search of the American Dream: the USA c1917–1996 • India, c1914–1948: the road to independence • Ireland and the Union, c1774–1923 • Coursework – the origins of the Cold War How will I be studying? Learning history in the Sixth Form involves reading books, using the internet, taking part in discussions and debates, writing, arguing, working in groups, working individually and immersing yourself in the period. You will be taught how to write essays and how to effectively make arguments. How will A Level History help me in the future? History is an incredibly rewarding subject. It has retained its intellectual rigour and continues to be extremely highly regarded by universities. As well as introducing students to historical periods beyond their existing experience, it develops highly prized, transferable skills such as critical analysis and effective communication.

Entry requirements

What qualifications are needed to follow this course? Six GCSEs/IGCSEs at grade 6 including English and Mathematics. In addition, a grade 6 in History or Religious Studies is preferred.

How is the course assessed? Examination for papers 1, 2 and 3. Paper 1: 2.25 hours 30% Paper 2: 1.5 hours 20% Paper 3: 2.25 hours 30% Coursework: 20%
