Classical Civilisation is a very academic subject aimed at students who struggle to decide on a humanities subject due to their own wide set of interests. Through studying the ancient world of Greeks and Romans, students get a flavour of philosophy politics, history, social history, and literature, all of which is studied in English. Classical Civilisation is an essay subject, which focuses on discussion-based learning, understanding, and building arguments and critical thinking. The topics we study are: The World of the Hero (The Odyssey and the Aeneid, two significant epics of the ancient world), The invention of the barbarian, which looks at the Persians from Greek world view and Politics of the Late Roman Republic, delving into the decades prior to the formation of Roman Empire, the period of great political intrigue, like the assassination of Julius Caesar or the life of great statesmen and public speaker Cicero.
To maximise success at A Level we recommend: • A sum of at least 30 points from the top five GCSE grades • Grade 5 in GCSE English • Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics • Grade 7* in the subjects to be studied at A Level All applications to subjects will be considered. Students are encouraged to speak with the Head of Department, Deputy Head Academic, or Sixth Form Academic Coordinator who can advise further on suitability to the A Level course. *Grade 8 for Further Mathematics.
