Photography is about looking, learning, thinking and communicating ideas, inspiring creative thinkers. Photography means “drawing with light” and that is what photographers do when they take a picture. Many photographers have explored various techniques to create images that make a personal statement about things that have interested or concerned them. The most exciting aspect of photography is that you are learning to capture the world as you see it. You will be learning to use photographic equipment effectively whilst cultivating an understanding of visual communication. This is a one year course where you will explore digital photography and have opportunities to develop traditional dark room processes. How will I be studying? AS Level Photography is a one year practical course in which you will learn by doing. You will explore a range of techniques and processes, including traditional darkroom and digital imagery, use of cameras, aperture, shutter speed, movement and printing. You will develop your creativity and independent thought, learning to express yourself visually and effectively. The course will explore topics such as portraiture, studio photography, installation, documentary, fashion, moving image, Photoshop techniques and multimedia experimentation. How will AS Level Photography help me in the future? AS Level Photography will provide students with the opportunity to develop technical skills in a variety of mediums. They will become more visually aware and widen their knowledge of a range of artists, movements and cultures. Photography also offers students invaluable transferable skills such as problem-solving, independent working and a confident and measured approach to risk taking. Many students discover that this subject opens doors to careers in graphic design, animation, film and televsion, marketing, creative and editorial photography to name a few.
What qualifications are needed to follow this course? Six GCSEs/IGCSEs at grade 6 including English and Mathematics.
How is the course assessed? The AS Level course has one component: Personal investigation (portfolio) task (100%) Students produce a portfolio of practical work showing their personal response to a set starting point, brief, scenario or stimulus. The portfolio may be presented in appropriate formats for the specification title they are following and chosen area of study, including sketchbooks, digital presentations, mounted sheets, maquettes, prototypes, animated work, scale models or illustrated written work. The portfolio must provide evidence that the student has met all four assessment objectives.
