Course summary

Why study A Level Russian? The knowledge of a foreign language is a highly sought after skill by universities and employers alike. The fifth most prevalent language in the world, Russian is spoken by 300 million people with more native speakers in Europe than any other language. Russia is a major player on the international stage and rapid economic growth in Russia means that many global companies seek to employ Russian speakers. Russia boasts a fascinating culture and some of the finest traditions in the arts including world-famous literature, music and ballet. What will I be studying? Language work will cover four main themes: • The development of society in Russia • Political and artistic culture in the Russian-speaking world • Moscow or St. Petersburg • The final years of the USSR Indepth study of these themes will develop your speaking, listening, reading and translating skills. We will also study two Russian works: either two literary texts or one literary text and a film. How will I be studying? You will continue to develop your language in the four skill areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as studying Russian grammar in depth. In addition to your lessons, you will have one 30-minute individual session per week with our Russian Assistant, which will allow you to focus on your spoken language. As well as studying the language, the A Level topics ensure that you also develop your knowledge of Russian history, society and culture. How will A Level Russian help me in the future? Russian is taught in only a handful of schools in the UK, so you will always stand out from the crowd if you have studied it at A Level. However, this should not be the only reason to study the language of the largest country of the world and a language that is understood by the majority of Eastern Europeans. As well as professions such as teaching and interpreting, Russian could lead to high-flying careers in the foreign office, law, business or the security services, to name but a few. Strong language skills are highly prized by employers and you will also find out much more about a fascinating culture and society which has stark similarities to and differences from ours.
