1. The World of the Hero: studied over two years. We read two key texts in English translation, Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s epic poem the Aeneid, which was heavily influenced by Homer. We read most of the set text in class, with discussion and notes to develop our understanding of their characters, plot and themes, including the role of the gods, the nature of heroism, the role of women and family, hospitality, homecoming, heroism, adventure and fantasy, loyalty, disguise and revenge. 2. Greek Theatre: studied in Y12. This course involves reading three Greek plays in English translation. We cover Sophocles’ Oedipus, Euripides’ Bacchae and The Frogs by Aristophanes. These plays are perhaps the finest examples of Greek tragic and comic drama. In addition, we study the artistic and cultural context and material culture, including some specific ancient vases and theatre spaces. 3. Greek Religion: studied in Y13. This option involves a close look at the most famous sanctuaries from the ancient world - the acropolis of Athens, Delphi and Olympia. We investigate the sacred spaces, architecture and material culture which teach us about Greek religious practice.
Grade 6 or above in a humanities GCSE such as English Literature, Classical Civilisation, Religious Studies, History or Geography.
