From pheromones to microchips, it is a knowledge of Chemistry – elements and compounds composed of atoms, molecules and ions, their composition, structure, properties and behaviour – that underpins our understanding of the world around us. Chemists are at the forefront of research in new technologies in medicine, materials, and alternative energy production. It is because of this key role in emerging markets that employment prospects are good – not all chemists wear white coats.
Entry is dependent upon performance in the interview and a satisfactory reference, including GCSE/IGSCE predicted grades where relevant. Candidates will also be required to sit a computer based verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessment. For candidates outside of the UK we may also require the Ukiset test to be sat prior to interview.
Students are assessed within the department on their practical skills. A pass in this component will be reported on their results certificate. Students need to be aware that A level Chemistry is a demanding subject and must discuss their options with the Head of Department prior to registration.
