A-Level Music is a challenging, yet rewarding choice of study. It combines academic rigour and practical focus and builds on the listening, composing and performing skills already developed at GCSE. The subject requires a good level of performance ability on an instrument of the candidate’s choice. This would ideally be at a level above Grade 5 in the Associated Board examinations. The most important requirement is the desire to explore music from diverse periods and countries. An interest and flair in musical composition is also highly desirable, as 30% of the overall examination covers this subject area.
• 40% written exam, assessing each pupil’s understanding of a wide variety of music, such as Western Classical, Baroque Choral studied from the Anthology. • 30% externally assessed coursework; two compositions, one set to a brief from the Exam Board. • 30% externally assessed coursework; A public recital lasting a minimum of 8 minutes.
