The A-level qualification in Design & Technology is aimed at those of you who enjoy designing and making high-quality products. Much like at GCSE, the A-level course is split between creating a portfolio, making a product and completing an exam. Product Design will encourage students to understand the needs of their clients, to develop their primary research skills and to communicate effectively by presenting a range of design proposals. Students will appreciate the importance of manufacturing high-quality products, which are fit for purpose and solve a realistic problem identified by the client. The two-year course is a chance for students to showcase all the skills they have accumulated since starting GCSE. In the first year of the course, students will complete a range of NonExam Assessment (NEA) tasks which will consist of design and make activities, developing their tool-handling skills, manufacturing techniques, materials knowledge and working properties, all of which will challenge and inspire students to problem-solve throughout the year. In the second year, students will use their knowledge and skills to undertake a single major project, working primarily on solving a real problem, for a real client. Students will receive weekly theoretical lessons to develop their subject knowledge throughout the two years.
GCSE Requirements • At least three grade 7s or above • At least three grade 6s or above • At least grade 5 in English and Maths • The required grade at I/GCSE in the qualifying subject/s required for their chosen courses – see the Qualifying Subjects.
A Level Product Design is assessed through a 50% Non-Exam Assessment, whereby an electronic portfolio is submitted, along with a single high-quality practical outcome. The examination is in two parts; Paper 1 is 30% (2 hours and 30 minutes, and Paper 2 is 20% (1 hour and 30 minutes and is marked externally). The NEA, which will make up 50% of the final grade, consists of a traditional design and make activity but a greater focus is placed on designing for a commercial client. Pupils should aim to work with a range of materials and consider how their product could be adapted for larger-scale production. Maths skills will be 15% of the total qualification and will be the equivalent of a higher tier in a GCSE qualification in mathematics. All students must have a device with Microsoft Windows operating system to enable access to CAD/CAM programs throughout their A-level course.
