Course summary

The OCR Level 3 EPQ is offered as a self-led additional qualification for motivated pupils. This course is a test of independence and self-motivation and, as such, help and guidance are given with topic choice, project management, and submission but all of the work is done off-timetable and without formal lessons. This qualification offers pupils an opportunity to learn about project management, a vital component of ‘post school’ life and of particular relevance to Further Education, Higher Education, and the workplace. Each pupil is able to tailor their project to fit their individual needs, choices and aspirations and will be assessed on four areas: Managing a project Using resources Developing and realising a project Reviewing the project. The outcome of the project can be a design, performance, report, dissertation or artefact. Whatever form this takes, the project must include a written component. Generic skills can also be developed and applied through the Extended Project; pupils will have the opportunity to apply and develop their personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS), the functional skills of English, Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and key skills. An EPQ can greatly enhance a student’s university application, especially in areas that are not as well covered by standard A Level subjects.

Entry requirements

Places for entry into Year 12 will be offered on the basis of a satisfactory report from the pupil’s present school and a series of short interviews with the Headmaster or one of the Deputy Heads, the Head of Sixth Form or a Senior Sixth Form Tutor, and two subject interviews with Heads of Departments. Pupils looking to join the Sixth Form must reach a minimum target for entry, consisting of: GCSE grade 4 or IGCSE grade 4 or C or above in English Language and Mathematics (grades 6 or B or above are preferable). A minimum point score of 54 (taken from the 9 best subjects including English Language and Mathematics) with points taken at face value for numerical grades or for alphabetical grades as follows: 8 points for an A*, 7 for an A, 6 for a B, and 5 for a C. Short courses and grades below 4 or C are not counted for the purposes of entry scores It is recommended that pupils also gain GCSE grade 7 or IGCSE grade 7 or A or above in the subjects chosen for A Level or in allied subjects for A Levels that were not studied at GCSE (eg Physics for Electronics)
