Course summary

The AQA Biology A Level specification is a content-led course where the specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of Biology. Teaching of practical skills is integrated with the theoretical topics and they are assessed both through written papers and assessed practicals. Students are asked to attend a Biology field trip in the summer term where statistical and ecological aspects of the course are studied. The content of the course specification includes: In Year 12, studies in biological molecules, cells, aspects of physiology, variation and relationships between organisms. Year 13, energy transfer in and between organisms, responses to the environment, inheritance, evolution and ecosystems.

Entry requirements

• Grade 7 or above in GCSE Biology, or Grade 7 or above in the Biology component of a Science Double Award • Grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics

How you'll be assessed

Biology is a practical science, and this is recognised in the way in which the A Level is assessed. In addition to routine laboratory work, there are a series of practical activities through the course, which contribute towards the Practical Endorsement. Additionally, practical techniques and the associated skills are examined in the written papers.
